Airplanes, Trains, Automobiles and Boats

Morah Katie: What are some ways people can be transported from one place to another?
Evan: Airplanes take people places.
Morah Katie: Do airplanes take people places quickly or slowly?
Evan: Quickly.
Morah Katie: Are there other ways people can be transported from one spot to another?
Moshe: Cars.  They take people from one place to another.
Morah Katie: Do cars go fast or slow?
Moshe: Slow.
Morah Katie: Did you all get to school in a car today?
Friends: Yes.
Morah Katie: What if you didn't have a car? Long ago, before there were cars, how do you think kids got to school?
Evan: Horses. If you had a farm.
Morah Katie: What if you didn't have a farm?
Evan: You would have to walk.
Morah Katie: How long do you think it would take to get to school.
Evan: Like an hour.
Morah Katie: Who is grateful for their parent's car?
Friends: We are!
Morah Katie: Any other ways to move people around?
Evan: Trains take people places. They can go fast.
Moshe: A limousine van goes places. Superfast.
Morah Katie: Any other types of transport?
Evan: Helicopters, they are a little bit fast, a little bit slow.
Morah Katie:  I have a question, what if you want to cross the big Columbia River, and you don't have a car to cross on the bridge, how could you get from Vancouver to Portland?
Moshe: Walk.
Morah Katie: Walk through the river?
Evan: Swim!
Morah Katie: Swimming could be an option, slightly dangerous, but an option.
Zoey: Just walk over the bridge.
Morah Katie: Right, you could walk over the bridge, walking is a form of transporting you from one spot to another.  WHAT if there wasn't a bridge and you wanted to go to Portland, how would you get there?
Moshe:  Run really fast......or use a boat!
Morah Katie: A boat can move people from one spot to another.

Morah Katie: What else can cars, trains, airplanes and boats transport?
Evie: People.
Morah Katie: Yes.
Evan: Food.
Moshe: Mail.
Zoey: Plants, trees.
Morah Katie: They do. Trucks often transport logs or lumber from trees.
Eli: Boats carry cars.
Morah Katie: They can. I have a question. If I was here in Vancouver and I was loading a truck with a lot of stuff like lumber and food, how long would it take for me to get it all to Camas?
Evan: Quick.
Morah Katie: What if I had to load all of it into a wagon, attach the wagon to a horse, and we had to walk there?
Zoey: Five hours.
Morah Katie: Which one would you want?
Kids: Truck!

Morah Katie: A long time ago, people transported themselves mainly by walking. Eventually they used animals.  It still took a long time.  It could be seen as a problem. If you need something and it is at great distance, or a need to tell someone something and they are at a great distance, walking may take too long.  Forutnatnately, Hashem gave us ...
Zoey/Evan: Brains.
Morah Katie: Humans used their brains and ingenuity to create machines to help them better transport people and goods.  They saw a problem and found a solution.

We read the book What Do You Do With A Problem? by Kobi Yamada and Mae Bosom to explore problems.
Morah Katie: What do we know about problems?
Evan: It's something when you need help.
Moshe: It's when it's not how you wanted it.
Shoshi: We solve it.
Morah Katie: The little boy in the book decided to stop being afraid of his problem.  He chose to look at his problem. It was brave. He discovered something.  When we really look at a problem, we see that there is something special hiding inside. What is the secret in every problem?
Shoshi: Glitter.
Morah Katie: And the glitter is something...
Shoshi: It is something beautiful.
Morah Katie: And that something beautiful inside every problem...
Moshe: Gives us an opportunity.
Evan: We can learn.

Morah Katie: We are going to begin preparing for a holiday.
Evan: Chanukah.
Morah Katie: Some important people in the Chanukah story had a problem, does anyone know what that was?
Moshe: The Maccabee's had to get rid of the Greek soldiers who were ruining everything.
Morah Katie: The Greek soldiers were a big problem for the Jewish people. The Maccabee's make  a choice to face their problem and ...
Moshe: A great miracle happens!
Morah Katie: We are going to begin talking a lot more about the Maccabbee's and their story next week.  It is going to be exciting and awesome. They were very brave.
